Homemade Oyster Crackers

Placement in the photo was made by Mummy.

I feel bad that I do not do a lot of baking with Bilal.  When Hasan was younger he would always help me.  Since we were not on any schedule we could always find time to do things together.  Since Hasan is in school everything has to follow that schedule.  Also it's very hard to get both of them to help me when I'm making something.  So when Hasan was at school, Bilal and I made these crackers.  Bilal loved making the crackers.  We used tiny cookie cutters to make some shapes but it started to take too long so we also used a pizza cutter and just cut it into small squares and rectangles.  Bilal also loved to eat the crackers as well.  He was calling them "Yummy Crackers".  While I was praying Zuhr I could hear Bilal was up to something in the kitchen.  So when I was done I quietly went to the kitchen to find him with his mouth full of crackers :).

Homemade Oyster Crackers
Adapted Cupcake Project

1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp baking powder
2 tbsp unsalted butter, cold
1/3 cup cold water
additional salt for sprinkling

Preheat oven to 375 F.  Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, salt, sugar and baking powder.  Cut butter into small pieces and add to bowl.  Using your hands make into a coarse meal texture.  Add cold water and lightly knead dough until it forms a ball.  You may have to add a tablespoon of water to get it to come together.  Cover the bowl and allow to rest for 15 minutes.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/8 inch thick.  Cut into desired shapes.  We used some small cookie cutters and a pizza wheel.  Place crackers on prepared baking sheet leaving a little bit of space in between.  Bake for 15 minutes or until bottoms are starting to brown.  Turn oven off and crack open the oven door.  Allow to cool in the oven for 20 minutes.  Timing will vary depending on how thin you roll out the dough so keep an eye on it so it doesn't burn.

Once crackers are cooled sprinkle with additional salt.

  1. I love that this is a relatively small amount of dough... and dude, you have SO much patience to use a tiny cookie cutter to cut out such small shapes! I made wheat thins once (and I want to again), but I got soooo tired of cutting out shapes and poking holes in each cracker!
I'm sure Bilal had a blast with you :) Doesn't it feel great to have our little ones in the kitchen with us :)

    1. Oh no..I don't have patience. I gave up soon and got out the pizza wheel. It was taking so much time and Bilal was getting distracted b/c it was so time consuming.

    2. I know, but still! After I made Wheat Thins I just gave us on homemade crackers because I just didn't have the patience to cut each square, then prick it like 9 times, and then transfer each one to a baking sheet. I've wanted to make homemade crackers, but the meticulousness is what puts me off.
These are really tempting because they don't need to be pricked, and I think Zunoon would have fun making shapes, so technically all I have to do then is put it on a baking sheet :) I've noticed that he enjoys eating foods that he helps make with me, and this looks like it would be a delicious snack :) Pinning this for this weekend when we're most likely going to be snowed in! Lol!

  3. It's so much fun to bake with the kids. It's even better when you catch them mouthful with the stuff they helped bake. Awesome crackers.
