Baked Whole Wheat Cinnamon Applesauce Doughnuts {SRC}

It's the last Monday of the month which means it's Secret Recipe Club.  This month I was assigned Making Miracles written by Rebekah.  Rebekah recently had a beautiful baby girl.  Congratulations Rebekah!  I couldn't believe that after having her baby, she was still updating her blog...WOW!!!  After I had my boys, whenever I had some spare time all I wanted to do was sleep.  But then again I wasn't blogging back then either.

After browsing Rebekah's blog I decided to make her Baked Apple Cinnamon Doughnuts.  The boys have been loving have doughnuts for breakfast so I thought these would be a hit in our home.  I replaced some of the flour with whole wheat flour and use coconut sugar as well.  I didn't find the doughnuts had a strong apple flavour.  I think next time I would try adding some fresh apple to the doughnuts.  The doughnuts were a hit with the boys and I will definitely be adding them to the breakfast line up!  Thank you for sharing the recipe Rebekah!

Baked Whole Wheat Cinnamon Applesauce Doughnuts
Adapted from Making Miracles

1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
6 tbsp coconut sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp vanilla powder
6 tbsp milk
1 tbsp orange juice
1/4 tsp white vinegar
1 egg
1/3 cup applesauce
1 tbsp canola oil

Topping
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp butter, melted (I used margarine)

Preheat oven to 325 F.  Grease a doughnut pan.

In a large bowl, mix together flours, coconut sugar, salt, cinnamon, baking powder and vanilla powder.
Add the wet ingredients (milk, orange juice, vinegar, egg, applesauce and oil).  Mix well.

Fill prepared doughnut pan and bake 10-15 minutes.

Once the doughnuts are done, allow them to cool for a few minutes.  While the doughnuts are cooling, prepare the topping.  In a small dish add the melted butter.  In another dish mix the cinnamon and sugar.  Dip the top of each doughnut in the melted butter followed by the cinnamon sugar.  Eat right away or when the have cooled!

  8. Fresh apples sounds great, but I still think cinnamon flavor is awesome in these! The addition of whole wheat flour is perfect too. Such a great breakfast treat!

  11. This is such a great way to incorporate healthy and fun into food! Sometimes it's so hard to get kids to eat healthy, so you have to be smart about it. I love that you always take that approach :) That is definitely one of the qualities about you that I admire so much, that you always are trying to feed your children nourishing things, but you always keep in mind that they are kids so you cook/bake accordingly. :)
They look fab! And i loveeee the fall flavors :)

    1. I just started to do this in September. I have been struggling with getting them to eat their breakfast quickly and make our mornings go more smoothly on weekdays. Hasan has also gotten bored with cereals and just wants me to buy Froot Loops. He isn't into baked oatmeal either..he says it tastes good but doesn't want any. I'm okay with it once in awhile but Froot Loops really is just junk. So I try to make things that they are excited about but aren't decadent. I find if I put chocolate in it it gets Hasan really excited :) But I also need to find time to bake which can be a challenge....

  12. Doughnuts seem perfect to eat, but tricky to make, I am a bit scared to try and make them... but your combination of flavors makes these very very tempting... ;-)
